A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that produces light when an electrical current passes through it.
Within the LED, electrons and holes recombine in an active semiconductor layer, releasing energy in the form of photons, or light.
The semiconductor materials used within an LED determine the wavelength, and therefore the colour, of the light it produces.
